Does anyone know what the steps are to getting your licence to drive a bike in Ontario? What are the insurance rates for a 19 year old male? Any good sites for beginners that you can direct me to?

First sign up for a course at an approved motorcycle school.

Read both the Driver's book and Motorcycle book to assure you pass the written test. Then go to the License Dept and write the two tests for your M1 and pay your money.

With M1 in hand take the course you signed up for. Note the M1 is only good for a maximum of 90 days so some planning is needed. At the course assuming you pass the test - if you don't you can go back a week or two later and take it again - you will be given a sealed envelope to take to the License Dept after you have had your M1 for at least 60 days. They will give you your M2. No more money to pay.

As to insurance you will find sport bikes of almost any kind and any bike over about 500cc very expensive at your age and experience. I have heard of teenagers like yourself paying more per year to insure a 650 sport bike than the bike cost new.

SO start small and work your way to what you want to ride after you get some riding experience and a year or two older.

The price you pay will reflect your current driving record, the type of bike you buy (make the first one used!) and where you live within the province. You will probably need to go with a company that insures your car or your (or your parents') home.

The M1 license can be obtained by passing a knowledge test at your closest DriveTest centre. You will need to purchase "The Official Driver's Handbook" and "The Official Motorcycle Handbook" from a DriveTest centre or Chapters bookstore.
A G1 license isn't required, however I was asked several questions about G1 license restrictions on the test ... don't ask me why.
The M1 license is valid for 90 days and you must hold it for a minimum of 60 days before moving up to an M2 license.

Varies depending on state- age may also be a factor. New Jersey noted to require motorcycle license for scooters as they don’t get to have moped plates there- no pedals. Colorado noted not to require license for moped plated scooters for adults- the reason bars have so many scooters in parking lots after the drivers license pulled for drunk driving. Wisconsin says a regular drivers license OK – no motorcycle endorsement needed- lots of moped plated scooters on campus(often ridden by drunks). So where are you located- check your DOT/DMV.
